Toto Wolff Set to Divest Shareholding Pricing Mercedes F1 at £4.6bn

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – after McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who each also own one-third of the enterprise.

An official representative said: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

The deal would represent a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years due to the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports film to date.

Current Performance

Mercedes are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
