Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
