Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
