A recent study reveals that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
